My problem is related to the graphics card mentioned above. I'm using an old HP Media Center to run World of Warcraft, and I expected the game to be a little slow when run through onboard graphics. The problem is that, after installing the NVidia and using it instead of the onboard graphics, the game runs even slower. Before installing the card, I couldn't even run games like Minecraft or Team Fortress 2, but afterwards they run at a level I would expect them to. World of Warcraft is the only program that seems to have become worse after the upgrade. Is there any way to fix this, or is this particular card not suited to run the game at all? Thanks for any help you can offer!

Strictly speaking, the entire GeForce FX 5K-series of graphics cards are unsupported in WoW. The minimum requirements list a GeForce 6800, which is significantly faster than any FX 5K card ever released. For WoW, however, I'm not surprised that it runs worse. While the FX series of cards offer more features than your onboard (note that I'm assuming you're using at least a GMA950), its actual theoretical throughput is lower than your onboard graphics. In fact, the only place it may have an edge is memory bandwidth and latency.

So essentially it's trying to do more with less, and it's doing about as well with that as can be expected. Realistically, you'll have to turn down everything in order to get something playable in WoW. Even going so far as to use Bilinear filtering - the FX 5500 is the kind of card where even Trilinear filtering isn't 'free'. Basically use the Low preset, ensure that Multisampling is set to 1x and don't use a resolution higher than 800x600.ed: Minecraft and TF2 likely run better due to the higher levels of optimisation in the NVidia drivers over the Intel ones. Intel has never been known for good graphics drivers. However, both also use significantly simpler engines than WoW - most noteably in their lack of pixel shaders (Minecraft, by default, doesn't even really use hardware geometry).

The FX series, despite claims otherwise, offered abysmal real-world shader performance. As the previous post mentions the minimum requirements are as follows from the b.net support site: Windows XP/VISTA/7 Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X2 NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or ATI Radeon X1600 Pro (256 MB) 2 GB RAM 25 GB HD space Recommended from their site (incase you look at upgrading again): Windows 7 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz or AMD Athlong 64 X2 2.6GHz or better NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT, or ATI Radeon HD 4830 (512 MB) or better 4 GB RAM Personally, I wouldn't bother upgrading with anything less than the 200 series Nvidia cards. Well, it's weird, because my onbaord (Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express) runs quiet zones at over 30 FPS with no stutter or any problems, and I'm pretty sure it's way under the minimum, just assuming by its age. I don't think I should be able to run the game either way, but I'm getting significantly better performance from the onboard graphics.

Of course, I'd like to thank you both for responding. I'm glad to know the card itself is pretty bad and that it's not a significant issue with my setup. I didn't pay for this card, so it's not skin off my bones either way. It's like I mentioned in my post - the FX series of cards are more fully-featured.

There's likely some stuff that your onboard simply isn't doing, or its using trickery to pretend to do properly, which the FX is in turn doing the way it should be done. Even if the FX were a more powerful card (even if only a little), this would still pull it down just by virtue of it doing the job right. To use a car anology (since they seem to be the most widely understood), imagine you've got two cars pulling trailors. One is less powerful and hauling a full 4,000lbs of weight behind it - the other is more powerful and has a trailor which looks like it has 4,000lbs but only weighs 500lbs.

WoW looks like 4,000lb trailor, whether all that weight is actually there or not. TF2 and Minecraft are unhitching the trailor entirely, where the less powerful car shows off its better gear ratios for top speed and acceleration.
