Just wondered what soundcard is best for use with a software defined receiver as I'm looking to upgrade the soundcard in my pc. My current soundcard in the pc is a Soundblaster Audigy 4 and when I use my elektor SDR with it I always seem to get some interference. I'm assuming it's down to the soundcard generating the interference as when I use the Elektor on my MacBook (runing Windows) which uses a Cirrius Logic soundcard I don't get the interference. I decided to try and replace the card with something differen't as apart from anything else it is getting on a bit now so I'm going to see if upgrading to something newer and better solves the problem. A couple of things to consider before replacing your PC soundcard:. It could be a windows driver issue, try ASIO drivers if you haven't already done so. The interference may be generated by your PC (ground loops/defective component).

A replacement PCI card may not improve things. The Asus Xonar D1 is a popular choice for an internal PCI card. 24 bit 192k record sampling, it's drivers can port audio to multiple applications, has a low noise floor and not expensive.

Likewise but with only 96k sampling available, M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and Delta 44 (with external unit). USB audio interfaces have been reported to solve some PC user problems with soundcard SDR. Popular among these is the E-MU 0202, (a replacement model has come out E-MU 0204, which looks promising). Be aware the drivers can use a lot of PC resources, may struggle with older machines. There's also the Roland Edirol FA-66 Firewire, and M-Audio Profire 610. Can you borrow another soundcard to try in your pc? Might help determine if the noise is soundcard or PC related.

Also, plug the SDR into your Mac and see if your antenna is picking up interference when the PC is turned on. Hope this helps.
