After a fresh custom install of Squeeze I could not play any video. Debian-multimedia.org repository is in my sources.list Trying to play an AVI video with totem I get the message Code: tiresia@mydeb:$ totem Videos/therainmaker.avi (totem:10205): GStreamer-WARNING.: Failed to load plugin '/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstffmpeg.so': libva-0.31.0.6.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Since Debian's official packages aren't currently built with libva, it must be a debian-multimedia bug. The recent libva in /usr/lib/ is Code: tiresia@mydeb:$ locate libva /usr/lib/libva.so.1 /usr/lib/libva.so.1.0.1 Linking /usr/lib/libva.so.1 to /usr/lib/libva-0.31.0.6.so.1 solves this issue Code: root@mydeb:/home/tiresia# ln -s /usr/lib/libva.so.1 /usr/lib/libva-0.31.0.6.so.1 Not sure that this problem is connected to this thread See also. Not sure how it would affect vlc or mplayer since neither one uses gstreamer.

Vlc and mplayer use ffmpeg. Craigevil wrote:Not sure how it would affect vlc or mplayer since neither one uses gstreamer. Vlc and mplayer use ffmpeg. Sorry, you are right. So here more precisely each player's message opening an AVI file TOTEM: no video, no audio Code: (totem:12109): GStreamer-WARNING.: Failed to load plugin '/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstffmpeg.so': libva-0.31.0.6.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory VLC: no video, audio yes Log Message in the GUI 'No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format 'XVID'. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.'

Code: 0x7f2b78006a88 main decoder error: possibly corrupt module cache 0x7f2b78006a88 main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'. VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

0x19d0558 a52 decoder: A/52 channels:2 samplerate:48000 bitrate:192000 0x2bde688 pulse audio output: No. Of Audio Channels: 2 MPLAYER: works, both video and audio Linking as explained above solve the problem in TOTEM as well as in VLC. Wget vlc xvidtest.avi Plays just fine here. It does give one error. I do not have any gstreamer plugins installed.

Libva1 is coming from Debian proper now (so it appears). It's being phased out of dmm. Libva1 is used by libavcodec52, as compiled by dmm. It's not used by the version in sid or squeeze in Debian proper. It is, however, used by the version in experimental, so looks like it's coming. Ffmpeg uses libavcodec52 (as do a bunch of other apps, including vlcx). There's a version difference between the (dmm) versions in unstable in testing. Code: libavcodec52 5:0.6svn20100526-0.0 testing www.debian-multimedia.org libavcodec52 5:0.6svn20100603-0.0 unstable www.debian-multimedia.org and I suspect that this is the package that actually needs to be updated. Updating ffmpeg just happened to pull in the newer version of libavcodec52.
